The game forced me to discard my objective (I think I had too many) and swap two pens. Unfortunately, I the interface wouldn't let me swap two pens though I tried swapping a large amount of pens. We quit the game due to being unable to progress.

There shouldn't be a cap on the number of objectives. The implementation won't force a discard.
What did you try to swap the pens? The Confirm button is shown only when exactly 2 cells are selected.
