This should be enabled in Arena as well, since it is the way people prefer to play in non-arena. It is confusing to not have the option enabled when you're used to it. This isn't "babysitting", it is just making the UI clear and preventing a mistake that wouldn't happen in live play.
It has made the games much more interesting/fun since the feature was added. It is no fun to have your game spoiled by overlooking a speed limit, arena or not.
My comments from "WARNING GEAR LIMIT / SPEED LIMIT":
Some will argue that making this mistake is part of the game, but it really ruins the fun of a close game when somebody makes this mistake. You should win/lose based on your skill/luck, not an error in reading the board or understanding the rules. Also, I doubt this occurs in a live game, since either folks would miss it entirely or allow the (usually) minor correction that fixes the issue.
Plenty of other games warn you when you're doing something that may be an error. For example, Through the Ages warns you if you pass with actions left, or will gain corruption. Terra Mystica warns you when you pass at the end of the round that you'll be passing for the remainder of the round.
Loss of Control can be a huge penalty, losing a turn and potentially gaining damage. It makes sense when you've pushed your luck, *that's* the game, but overlooking or misunderstanding how those little numbers work just feels like an annoying gotcha. It is particularly frustrating for beginners, but even experienced players can make this mistake, and it leads to a less satisfying/fun game. -

It 'd happen a lot in live play!
If you notice you played the dice wrong, then stop rolling when you get to the misplaced die, and you won't spin out. If you do a flat out you are allowed to rearrange the dice. Being able to plan your course is indeed a big part of the game, which is removed by having this option on and hence is babysitting the players.
Use your time available to make sure you don't misplace the dice and everything is fine. In my last game today nobody did a 00 spin out and nobody made a spin out but overlooking a speed limit.
Comparing this with other games' warning isn't fair, as they don't warn you if you make a mistake but just tells you if have actions left. In fact I think Rallyman should do that as well. I have more than once mistakenly made a flat out without using all my dice. Would be nice to get a warning there. And that kind of warning is comparable with those you mentioned.
If somebody didn't notice they placed the dice wrong originally, there's a much lower chance they'll notice and stop rolling.
If nobody is making this mistake, why do you care? It makes the games more competitive without a small mistake tripping them up. I've played a number of games with 200+ ELO folks and they're making this error again now that the warning is removed.
As for whether this would happen in live play, I think this would go overlooked or the other players would let you change it or point it out before you start. Letting them start and then saying "Ah ha! You lose control" doesn't sound like a good way to make friends.
I'd compare it to saying "check" in chess, you don't stay silent and then claim victory when they didn't notice the check. Of course, it is different since it is a rule, but that's why the rule exists.
And in fact those I play with irl would be happy for me making a mistake to take advantage of it. Isn't that what gaming is about? Being the one making fewer mistakes than the rest? A saying in chess goes like this - the winner is the one making the 2nd last mistake.
People still make these mistakes. I just pointed out it's possible to avoid it without babysitting.
These mistakes can be great if you have been unlucky with a 00 spin out, and gives you a chance to catch up. After the babysitting began you just were lost if you did a 00. I like the catch up opportunities as it makes the game interesting from start to finish.
I'd be curious as to the designer's thoughts on this, since of course they've played and taught this game a lot. Do automatic LOC's from missing the speed limits happen during live games or do folks point it out and re-arrange the dice?
In any event, if you watch the games in Simple mode, I don't see any games where people opt to shut the warning off. The devs can check the data, but people seem to prefer having the warning on. It is a nice feature since it lets you focus on the interesting parts of the game, rather than squinting at the board. It seems like if that's what people are used to, then Arena should be the same.
I don't agree that Arena should somehow be "hard-mode", that would be like shutting off the Corruption warning in TTA in Arena. I don't think people would like that.
Sure, it can let you catch up if you had an 00 spin out due to bad luck, but I think it is more fair and fun to catch up based on them having a crash from bad luck rather than missing or mis-interpreting the limits. It is a push-your-luck game, after all!
Since Arena has levels (Bronze, Silver...), what about disable this alarm for races with Elite players only?
It is incredibly frustrating to ruin our race because of this kind of mistakes, often due to the size of the numbers at screen! Or at less, please give a real zoom option to the entire screen when it's our turn! Think about older players svp ! ^^
